Chapter 1 · yōgo (care)
Keeping a body alive and well
The first half of yōgo — life preservation — sounds dramatic. In practice, it’s mostly quiet, physical, and constant.
Life preservation
Four aims, one thread: the body cared for
The aims of life preservation: every child lives comfortably; every child stays healthy and safe; every child’s physical needs are properly met; every child’s health is actively promoted. The content that supports these aims covers accurate observation of each child’s health, close cooperation with families and doctors, a clean and safe environment, and helping each child build good rhythms around rest, food, and hygiene.
But here’s the key
“Comfortable” is a legitimate aim, not a bonus
Notice the first aim isn’t “kept alive” — it’s “lives comfortably.” Life preservation in this guideline isn’t a bare-minimum survival standard. It’s a standard of comfort and active health, which is a much higher bar than most new staff assume when they hear the word “safety.”
In real life
The daily health check no one sees
Every morning I glance at each child as they arrive — skin colour, energy, mood, any new mark or bruise, anything different from yesterday. It takes seconds per child and I rarely mention it. But it’s the exact content this article describes: accurate, ongoing observation, done quietly, every single day.
A common misunderstanding
“No one got hurt, so I did life preservation right.”
“As long as nothing bad happened today, I’ve met this part of the guidelines.”
“I’ve met it if every child was actually comfortable, rested, fed, and actively cared for — not just unharmed.”
Why this matters to you
This article gives you permission to treat the physical basics — sleep, food, hygiene, health checks — as first-class childcare work, not chores that get you away from the “real” job. They are the job, named explicitly, with their own aims.
Your turn
Is there a child whose comfort I’ve been checking on autopilot rather than really noticing?
Look a little closer at them tomorrow morning.
