Safety is what makes richness possible

Chapter 1 · the environment of childcare

Safety is what makes richness possible

Environment (b) pairs two words that don’t usually sit together: rich activity, and hygiene and safety.

Rich activity needs a maintained foundation

So that children’s activities can unfold richly, prepare the nursery’s facilities and environment, and work to secure a healthy, hygienic, and safe environment.

But here’s the key

Safety isn’t the opposite of freedom

A room only feels free to explore when the adults in it have already done the invisible work — checked the corners, wiped the surfaces, secured the shelf. Children can’t sense that work directly. They just sense whether they’re free to move, and that freedom is built on it.

In real life

The five minutes before anyone arrives

Every morning, before the first child walks in, I sweep the room with my eyes for anything loose, sharp, or out of place. No one sees me do it. But it’s the reason a child can run across that room an hour later without me flinching.

A common misunderstanding

“Cleaning isn’t real childcare work.”

“Wiping tables and checking shelves is maintenance — the real work starts when the children arrive.”

“Wiping tables and checking shelves is the childcare — it’s what lets everything after that happen freely.”

Why this matters to you

If you ever feel like the unglamorous checks are taking time away from “real” teaching, this article is the reframe: they’re not separate from the teaching. They’re what makes the teaching safe to happen.

Your turn

What’s one safety check I do on autopilot?

Notice it consciously tomorrow, and give yourself credit for it.
