Article 1 names what makes a nursery a nursery: caring for a child and helping them learn are never two separate jobs.
The method
One job, not two
A nursery’s defining feature is simple to say and hard to master: trained staff, working hand in hand with families, support each child through the everyday environment — carrying out care and education together, as one whole.
But here’s the key
What “care” and “education” really mean
Care means protecting a child’s life and helping them feel emotionally safe and settled. Education means supporting their growth — curiosity, language, movement, friendships. The guidelines never split these into separate tracks: a child only explores and learns once they feel safe and held.
In real life
Both, in a single moment
A child trips and cries. You hold them until the tears stop — that’s care. Then you crouch down, “What do you think made you fall?”, and look at the step together — that’s education. Same minute, same child, one seamless act. That’s a nursery doing its work.
A common misunderstanding
“Care is for babies, lessons are for the big kids.”
“I keep the little ones safe and fed; real teaching starts when they’re older.”
“Every age gets both at once — I keep them safe and grow their minds in the same ordinary moments.”
Why this matters to you
It takes the pressure off “teaching”
New staff often panic that they have to run formal lessons. You don’t. Through the environment you set up and the way you partner with each family, you are teaching all day — at the sink, in the sandpit, at goodbye time.
Notice where each child is in their own development, keep them safe, and stay curious alongside them. That is the teaching.
